Haymarket Creative Solutions is a dynamic in-house creative agency that helps brands promote their products and services through market-leading Haymarket brands, including Stuff, What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision, FourFourTwo, What Car?, Autocar and Autosport.
We’re looking for a talented editor to write, commission, present and edit engaging content about the latest gadgets, home entertainment kit, sportswear and cars for a long list of high- profile clients.
The successful candidate will need to carefully balance the clients’ advertising goals with the editorial independence and integrity of the host brand. They will also need to balance their creativity with a realistic, cost-effective and time-efficient approach to client briefs.
The editor will work alongside the art editor, video editor and commercial team to actively pitch for new work, as well as deliver on exiting briefs. They will also liaise closely with the project management team to ensure projects are delivered on time and to budget. In addition, they will on occasion be expected to speak directly with clients to develop briefs, clarify strategic goals and achieve final project sign-off.
The department’s workload is diverse and the editor will be required to work across multiple brands and platforms, including print, digital, video, iPad and live events. As such, this is not a traditional magazine or website editor role, and previous creative solutions, customer publishing and/or copywriting experience is preferred.
The success of the department depends on long-term client satisfaction. To achieve this, the editor must always strive to deliver genuinely creative solutions to sometimes challenging client briefs, while also capitalising on Haymarket’s consumer media brands.
•Maintain and develop a team of high quality, motivated and effective staff who understand the demands and challenges of the department.
•In particular, have a close and effective working relationship with the art editor.
•Ensure good communication and teamwork throughout the editorial team.
•Maintain and commission a pool of high-quality freelance journalists and develop this pool where appropriate.
•Assist the Head of Creative Solutions in recruitment and appraisals when appropriate.
•Develop strong and effective relationships with all relevant brand owners across Haymarket’s editorial teams, and with the relevant publishing and sales team leaders.
•Work with the project management team to ensure editorial organisational systems are effective, and easily understood and managed in your absence.
•Create editorial content to fit the interests and needs of both the target audience and the business goals of the client.
•Demand the highest standards of journalism, design and production from both internal and freelance resource.
•Monitor rival publications and adjust your content/approach if appropriate.
Day to day
•Take responsibility for the editorial quality control of all projects that go through the department.
•Ensure the highest standards of accuracy in the department’s work, as well as the right tone, style and legality of all copy.
•Work with the project managers and head of department to ensure that the department operates within allocated budgets.
•Excellent writing and literacy skills, including the ability to sub-edit and proofread to a very high standard – the editor will be expected to both write and sub their own work, as well as freelancer copy, to a publishable standard.
•Creativity and flair.
•Strong magazine craft and visual understanding of how to bring stories alive in print, as well as through video and online.
•Excellent oral communication skills – the editor will on occasion be required to present client videos and pitch ideas to prospective clients.
•Excellent understanding of media law.
•Able to work as part of a team in a high-pressure environment.
•Strong time management and decision-making skills.
•An understanding of CMS and key web practices.
•Fluency in Adobe InDesign.
•A good working knowledge of modern consumer electronics technologies.
