NAME: Danny Newman
JOB TITLE: Senior Sales Executive

Danny’s Work Timeline:
July 2010:        Started as Recruitment Sales Executive
July 2011:        Promoted to Senior Sales Executive

What is your job title and what does your job entail?
As a Recruitment Sales Executive for Haymarket Business Media my day was split up doing a variety of things like making calls to existing clients, trying to find out if they have any potential recruitment coming up or if they are using us at the minute and providing them with an after-sales service to allow us to make sure that their recruitment campaign is going smoothly. I also spent time chasing new business, which can be done by chasing leads or service calling  potential new clients. There is also the opportunity to go out on as many meetings with my clients as possible. Meeting existing or new clients allowed me to develop better relationships and do a little bit of travelling.

Other time was spent sending out proposals, going on fortnightly training sessions and dealing with admin tasks such as working out my products market share within the sector.

What attracted you to Media Sales?
The reason I decided to go into media sales was because I knew I would be working in a fast-paced and potentially lucrative and rewarding environment. I knew that I could channel lots of the skills I learnt during my degree towards this particular role; therefore I saw potential within the industry for success.

What attracted you to Haymarket as a company?
Once I looked on the website and did a bit more research, I realised that this was a global company that would be a great place to work. I came for an open evening and I realised that there were plenty of opportunities within the company for progression and applied formally for a role.

What training have you received and how has it helped you in your role?
Since day one, I have received plenty of training to help me become successful within my role. If you need any specific training on a particular subject, then there will be a course that you can attend to help with skills such as negotiating skills or objections handling courses.

I also attend fortnightly training sessions, which deal with any day-to-day to problems that may arise. They have some experienced and knowledgeable people in place for these sessions, and these people are always there for any one-on-one sessions if needed.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In the next five years, I hope to still be working at Haymarket but in a more senior capacity! As you progress, there are different routes you can take in regards to management roles, such as going into a ‘super sales’ or a ‘people management’ role. Hopefully, I will get the opportunity to go down one of these routes.

Is there a good opportunity for you to progress your career with Haymarket?
When I first came to the company, one thing that was stressed was that there were opportunities to progress.

They also put a Career Development Plan in place for each individual, this plan gives you targets to enable you to progress, and it allows you to discuss your performance with the manager. This helps you understand exactly how well you are doing and what is needed to move up to the next level.

What advice would you give to anyone considering working for Haymarket?
Haymarket is one of the most respected media companies, and I have enjoyed my time here so far. I would suggest doing exactly what I did before I applied, and look at the Haymarket website and do your research. You will soon realise that this is a large and enjoyable company to work for.

What attracted you to Media Sales?
To be honest I fell into Media Sales straight after university, but found that I absolutely loved it. The industry is constantly changing and offering up new challenges for you to take and if you push yourself you won’t get bored as you can do pretty much anything if you find the right client. Media sales is a very sociable industry and the kind of people it attracts tend to be outgoing and lots of fun to work with every day.

What attracted you to Haymarket as a company?
Haymarket is a specialist media company and I grew up knowing some of their titles which interested me. This coupled with the fantastic training and career progression that is based on ability and not how long you have been at the company, makes it a great place to build your career within Media Sales.

I have recently taken over as Sales Manager of the Parks print team for the Outdoor Leisure Magazines and Guides; Practical Caravan, Practical Motorhome, BH&HPA Holiday Parks Guide and the David Bellamy, I also Manage the Online platform, Caravan Sitefinder, as well. This puts five members of the sales team reporting into me and I set target, do forecasts, think of new ideas and generally make sure everything ticks along ok. I also like to pay lots of commission to my team when we achieve our targets.

My managerial responsibilities do not stop me doing what I love and I am still able to talk to clients on a daily basis whether on the phone or going to meetings, to make sure that they are happy with what we’re doing and keep them updated with what is coming next

What training have you received and how has it helped you in your role?
I have a Business Management Degree that has helped with some aspects, however Haymarket offer some of the best training in the industry to make sure you feel comfortable with all aspects of Sales, from basic sales calling to huge presentations for hundreds of people.
